    BG Varillion

Bericht  Martijn op di maa 09, 2010 10:14 pm

    Before 1356:
Varillion grew up like many Elven youths. In the richness of an Elven city, surrounded by uncountable miraculous feats of nature. When he became of age, his rigorous training began.
Warming his muscles in the morning with exercises in armour.
And resting in the libraries, with all kinds of magical tomes, which interest him the most, his arcane studies.
Although he couldn’t match the most dedicated wizards spell for spell, his repertoire kept growing and for a while he would be able to keep his own in a duel.
His mentor an old relative of his father’s house, thought him well.
But besides the rigorous training sessions he also taught him about the history of his training profession.
How in the old days the people like him were the elite assault troops of many an Elven city, or acted often as military advisors to rulers or even as commanders themselves of armies.
But through the ages their importance, their glory, faded.
With more and more of the elves turning their backs to the world, the need for these highly trained soldiers diminished.

Hearing these tales while growing up, he became fascinated by them.
This even grew to a dream, to one day restore the order back to it’s former glory.
To stop the Elven retreat and make it safer for his people to stay in this world, to be a part of it as they have a right to be.

Orcs, gnolls and the most fearsome devils and demons would tremble when seeing the banners of the order flying high in front of them in the old days.

The years fly by, without any major events except for the occasional Orc war band or small band of evil outsiders, who at times traverse the High Forest.

    During 1356:
News reaches the Elven realm of a host of Devils occupying the ancient Dragonspear castle.
After many heated debates the council decides to send a few small detachments to assist Baldur’s Gate’s and Waterdeep’s combined forces who are on their way to lay siege to the castle.
The siege lasts for many months, in which many horrific battles occur, some lost, some won.
The Elven company that Varillion is part of bravely fights next to the human soldiers.
During one of these battles the host of Devils, that had secretly multiplied within the castle walls, tries one, of what would later be, their final attempts to lift the siege and break through the lines of the mortals.
Surprised, outnumbered and outmatched the front ranks fought a pitched battle, letting the host pay dearly for each foot of ground the defenders had to surrender.
Before the armies had time to react Varillion’s company gets cut off and surrounded by a massive wave of evil fiends.
During these few minutes the company gets decimated until only a handful remain alive, one of which being Varillion himself.
Wounded at multiple places and by a vicious combat with the a few fiends, Varillion manages to reach the safety of the newly formed human lines.
But seconds after passing the line of the humans Varillion gets hit by one of the countless fireballs being cast at the mortal forces by the fiendish host innate abilities.
Badly injured Varillion gets transported back to Waterdeep together with many other wounded to recuperate within the safe walls of the city.
It would be many months before Varillion manages to recover his strength.

    After 1356:
    Varillion resumes his training.
During this period he stays in Waterdeep taking advantage of some of the libraries there while recovering his skill and strength.
When the times of trouble hit Waterdeep Varillion helps defend the city where able.

    Alignment details:
During his tracks in nature Varillion learns that nature knows no mercy.
The strong survive, the weak only when they know how to outsmart the predators.
The weakest member can endanger a hole group.
This last saying gets confirmed during the battles at Dragonspear castle.
Seeing friends, comrades fall and others getting distracted to either help, tend or protect them.
To just being cut down themselves by abandoning their positions, leaving openings.
Openings which no fiend left unused, killing many more brave men.
This taught Varillion a hard lesson, that the weak are a hazard to a group and are better of being left behind.
Varillion believes in the laws of nature and abides by them, growing like nature indifferent in his actions towards others. Often translating into being distant, icy and non-social at times. But he loves to converse about history’s battles. Having felt the pain of losing friends all to well this behaviour prevents Varillion from bonding close enough with anyone and risk getting hurt again.
But when needing someone to fight at your side, you know that he is your man.
